Tip: Post this on the fridge or inside a cabinet door.
Goal: Survive the shaking safely, then handle aftershocks and immediate hazards.
DURING SHAKING (DO THIS)
- DROP to hands and knees
- COVER head/neck under sturdy furniture if possible
- HOLD ON until shaking stops
- Stay away from windows and heavy objects
IMMEDIATELY AFTER (FIRST 5–10 MINUTES)
- Expect aftershocks
- Check yourself and others for injuries
- Put on shoes (broken glass hazard)
- Grab flashlight (avoid open flames)
CHECK FOR HAZARDS
- Gas smell or hissing? Leave the area and notify building/utility
- Downed power lines outside? Stay away
- Unstable items on shelves? Move carefully
- Water leaks? Protect valuables and report
COMMUNICATIONS
- Text, don’t call (networks may be overloaded)
- Battery discipline (low power mode)
- Follow local emergency guidance
IF YOU NEED TO EVACUATE
- Use stairs (elevators may be unsafe)
- Grab go-bag if safe to do so
- Meet at your pre-planned location
PREP BEFOREHAND (FAST WINS)
- Secure heavy furniture (bookcases, TVs)
- Store heavy items low
- Keep flashlight + shoes near bed
- Build 72-hour basics (water, light, food, first aid)
Principle: Most injuries come from falling objects and glass. Move carefully after shaking stops.
