DISASTERS

Prepare

It is not being Paranoid, it is being Prepared

If you can find an "Active Shooter" training in your area, sign up for it. Nothing beats information from a reliable source.
If your work has an alert system, sign up for it.
Sign up to receive local emergency alerts.
Understand that an active shooter event can take place anywhere, so make a plan with your family as well.
Be aware of your environment, in other words, be alert.
Wherever you are, make sure you know where the two nearest exits are, and make sure you have an escape path in mind.

Survive

R U N and escape

Your main priority "is" to get away from the shooter or shooters.
Just run, do not try to grab your belongings.
If you can help others escape, do it. If they are resistant, run.
Let others know not to go into the area of the shooter.
Call 9 1 1 and give them as much information as possible about the shooter and his or her location and types of weapons being used.

H I D E and remain quiet

If you cant RUN, then hide and do so quickly & quietly.
Get in a room, lock the door, block the door, turn off the lights.
Spread out if there are a group of people in the room.
S I L E N T your cell phone, not a good time for an incoming call.
Contact the authorities to let them know where you are.
Put a sign in the window to alert authorities.
Remain in place until you get the all clear from law enforcement.

F I G H T as a last resort

If the shooter is making entry to your room, be prepared to do whatever it takes to survive.
Get others ready to help ambush the shooter. The more the better.
Use whatever is available, to include chairs, tables, microwaves, scissors, fire extinguishers, or whatever you can find.
Be prepared to be as aggressive as possible and cause severe or lethal injury to the shooter.
Remember this, anything can be used as a weapon!

Recover

After the A L L    C L E A R is given

Understand that law enforcement will be clearning the area as if the shooter or shooters are still active or capable of inflicting harm.
Listen to the commands of law enforcement.
Keep your hands "visible" and "empty" at all times.
If there are injured in immediate danger, help get them to safety.
Turn wounded people onto their sides and keep them warm if they are unconscious.
Seek professional help afterwards to help cope with the effects of this trauma.
