DISASTERS
Prepare
Not to repeat ourselves, but better prepared than scrambling
Practice Drop, Cover, and Hold On with your family and the people you work with.
Make sure you secure heavy items such as bookcases, refrigerators, dressers, and televisions to the wall. Use an anchor secured in a stud.
Heavy and breakable objects should be stored low, bottom shelves, never up high.
Keep a supply of water and food to last at least three days, for each person.
Keep a flashlight, batteries, fire extinguisher and a whistle in a known, easily accessible location.
The whistle is to use in case you become trapped in the debris. You dont want to utilze your energy screaming and taking a chance on swallowing dust and debris. Keep a whistle nearby.
Survive
Drop, Cover, and Hold On!
Earthquakes are the extreme of disasters, or at least in the opinion of those who have road one out.
They happen without warning and can damage roads, property, and buildings in just a matter of seconds. Worst of all they can cause fires, tsunamis, landslides, avalanches, destroy buildings and infrastructure, and leave people trapped beneath debris and rubble for days.
If an earthquake starts to rock your world, you need to protect yourself immediately.
If you are inside a building, do NOT run outside!
Do NOT stand in a doorway.
If you are outside, stay away from buildings. Falling debris.
If you are in bed, lie down face down, cover your head and neck with a pillow, and hang on.
If you are in your car, pull over, turn the engine off, and set your park brake.
Let us recap Surviving
Drop - Wherever you are, drop down on to your hands and knees!
Cover - Cover your head and neck with your arms. If there is a desk or table, hide under it.
Hold on - If you are under a desk or table, use one hand to hold on tight, and if it moves, move with it.
Protect yourself!
Recover
It aint over till the fat lady sings
The problem with earthquakes, you can always expect aftershocks to follow.
Make sure you are not injured, and if you can help others, do so.
If you are inside and the building is damaged, get outside and move away from the building.
If you are trapped, remember the WHISTLE, protect you mouth, nose and eyes from dust and debris. Send a text message, blow your whistle, bang on a wall or pipe, and do not scream!
Stay alert and listen to emergency broadcasts in your area.
