DISASTERS

Prepare

If you live in a Hurricane prone area, BE READY

You will know if you live in an area that is at risk of Hurricanes. So what is it exactly that you need to do to be ready for the next one?

Know your risk. Not just for the Hurricane, but also the rain, winds, and water that could effect your area.
Develop a plan, not just for you, but for your family and co-workers.
Include in your plan stocking enough supplies for your family and pets.
Do NOT forget about medications, disinfectant supplies, and pet food & supplies.
Have an evacuation plan, outlining where to go, and how to get there safely.
Have a backup plan to shelter in-place.
Sign up for FEMA and local emergency alerts systems, stay in the know.
Declutter your drains and gutters.
Bring in all outdoor furniture.
If you do not have hurricane shutters, board up windows with plywood sheets.
Listen and follow the orders & directions of local authorities.

Survive

Know your plan, work your plan

Given the advanced notice of an impending Hurricane, there should be NO reason for anyone NOT to be prepared.

Keep yourself informed by listening to alerts and local news.
Do as your told by local authorities, if they say evacuate, do so.
Seek shelter in a designated storm shelter.
If sheltering in-place, take refuge in an interior room to safeguard yourself from the potentially high winds.
Remember this, just 6 inches of fast moving water can knock you down.
If you are driving, 12 inches of fast moving water can wash your vehicle, and you, away.
Turn around, do not drown!

Recover

There are still dangers after the storm is over

Stay tuned to local officials and heed any special instructions.
Always wear protective clothing and work in teams during clean-up.
Never touch electrical equipment that has been in standing water or is wet.
Be careful of debris and downed electrical wires in flood waters.
Do not overload phone systems, use social media or text messages if at all possible.
