DISASTERS

Prepare

Even against a Tornado, you can be prepared

Stay informed by signing up for The Emergency Alert System (EAS) as well as local warning systems that are already in place.
Pay attention to weather reports. Tornadoes may come up quickly, but the weather conditions can predict the liklihood of a twister.
Identify a safe shelter to use during a tornado. As a last resort indoors, go to a small, interior, windowless room on the lowest level of the building.
Listen for community sirens.
Watch for rotating, funnel-shaped clouds.
Be aware of clouds of debris approaching your location.
If you hear a loud roar, similar to a freight train, shelter immediately.

Survive

You can hide, but you cant outrun

During a tornado, immediately go to your safe location or shelter that you previously identified.
Always cover your head & neck with your arms.
Place furniture and blankets around you, for additional cover.
Continue to listen to the Emergency Alert System as well as the local warning systems.
If you are in your vehicle, do NOT attempt to outrun a Tornado, ever!
If you are in your vehicle or outdoors, cover your head & neck with your arms, and cover your body with a coat or blanket. More protection.

Recover

It can seem like a war-zone afterwards

Continue to listen to the alert systems and local authorities.
If you are trapped, bang on a wall or pipe. Use a whistle instead of shouting.
Cover your mouth and nose to avoid breathing in dust.
Be aware of your surroundings, especially downed power lines.
Do NOT enter any building that has been damaged by the tornado.
Be careful during clean-up, and handling the debris.
